OHANA, Japanee Bakery

The Unique Evolution of the Japanese Bakery

Japanese bakery is very unique. They were first introduced to Japan about 680 years ago when Portuguese ships drifted to Japan. Later, with the arrival of Christianity came bread.
It was not until 150 years ago, when Japan opened its doors to the West, that the Japanese market began to spread in earnest. German, French, English, and American baking methods were introduced to Japan.
Bakeries began to appear all over Japan. Then a unique movement emerged. The first bakery in Japan was the Anpan, a type of bread made with rice flour and other ingredients influenced by traditional Japanese sweets and local cuisine.
